SharePoint online or on-premises Time Zone & Regional settings

This article is about SharePoint online or on-premises Time Zone, as we know what does means of time zone “A time zone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries and their subdivisions because it is convenient for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time.” From Google.
There are two types of SharePoint online or on-premises Time Zone.
  • Regional setting: this controls time zone for the site. This the default time zone where all user will inherit. This settings is controlled by the Administrator.
  • Personal setting: It is something like each user has control on and over the control to override Administrative default setting.

Let me describe you in details for Regional settings:

  • Regional setting: This zone will be set to each site separately and it has been controlled by the administrator only. We can change this site time zone also later on deployment and configuration, make sure you should have administrator rights to do the same.

To  Change the Regional setting to the site, we need to follow few of below steps:

Below are the steps with full description and screen shots:

  • Open any of SharePoint site with administrator rights and click on site setting (Gear Box) on the top of the page in right side.
  • Once clicked on the same, we will get option called site setting.
  • Click on site settings and select regional setting from site administrator option see below:


  • Now once selected regional settings we will redirect to the settings page of regional setting.
  • Here we can see there will be two heading option are available about regional settings following are below:

Time Zone: Specify the standard time zone.
Region: It will be about region, like timings calendar and etc…

Let’s see about Time Zone:

we have number of default time zone available from the drop down list, By default time zone will be selected as below:

<Default selected" value="13"> (UTC-08:00) Pacific Time (US and Canada)

so just we need to change this setting from different zone we need to select the Time Zone that you want for this site, and then choose the OK button

Now we will look into the Region setting:

  • Locale: Select a locale from the list to specify the way the site displays numbers, dates, and time.   Default it will be English USA.


If you wish to update local just select from drop down and click ok.
  • Sort Order: we can specify the sort order, if we have selected as English default it will show general.


  • Enable An Alternate Calendar: Specify a secondary calendar that provides extra information on the calendar features. Default it will be select as none.


  • Define Your Work Week: Here another option will available called define your work week, Select which days comprise your work week and select the first day of each work week.

  • Time Format: Here we can define time format, we can Specify whether you want to use 12-hour time format or 24-hour format.

  • Subsite Settings: If we are checking out this box, same setting will inherit to all subsite which will created under this site collection.

Now time to click on ok after all these settings. Once clicked on ok it will take effect immediately.
